Audition Information

When: Monday, February 6, 2012

Where: Based on instrument, either at Lakeside Middle School (see map) or at
individual school site (see below).


Rehearsal and Concert Schedule and Expectations

Note that students are expected to attend all rehearsals. If you are unable to make a full commitment to this group, please do not audition.

Students selected to be in the Honor Orchestra will be required to attend all rehearsals, as listed here (five rehearsals, a dress rehearsal on the day of the concert, and an additional rehearsal for Disneyland).  Also, please be aware that students will need to wear a white dress shirt/white blouse, tie, black slacks/skirt, and black shoes and socks at the honors concert and Disneyland performances.   Also, there is a suggested donation of $20 to help defray the costs for our Disneyland performance trip.

Students who have been chosen for a group need to follow through with all the requirements for rehearsals and performances, regardless of what chair or seat they may have earned. If your child fails to follow through for any reason other than bereavement or illness, he/she will not be allowed to audition the following year.


Audition Procedures

To be able to audition for the IUSD Middle School Honor Orchestra, each student must request an audition time on this site. Every effort will be made to honor specific requests and auditions will be scheduled on a first come basis. All auditions will occur at Lakeside Middle School except the following:

  • Flute players from Vista Verde and Plaza Vista Middle Schools will have their auditions at their respective schools and those will be scheduled with Mr. Ghiassi.
  • Double reeds (oboe and bassoon) from Rancho Middle School will have their auditions at Rancho and those will be scheduled with Mr. Kahelin.
  • Clarinet and Bass Clarinet players from Venado Middle School will have their auditions at Venado and those will be scheduled with Mr. McBrien.
  • Saxophone players from Rancho Middle School will have their auditions at Rancho and those will be scheduled with Mr. Kahelin.
  • Brass players from Sierra Vista Middle School will have their auditions at Sierra Vista and those will be scheduled with Mr. Miller.
  • Violinists from Sierra Vista Middle School, Rancho Middle School and Lakeside Middle School will have their auditions at their respective schools and those will be scheduled with their music teacher.
  • Violists from South Lake Middle School will have their auditions at South Lake and those will be scheduled with Mr. Grenier.
  • Cellists from Sierra Vista and Rancho will have their auditions at their respective schools and those will be scheduled with their music teacher.
  • Bassists and Percussionists from Lakeside Middle School will have their auditions at Lakeside and those will be scheduled with Mr. Robinson. All others need to schedule an audition time through this website.

Audition Requirements

For the audition, students need to prepare a solo, scales, and a concert piece that can be downloaded from this website. Auditions will also include sightreading. The requirements for each specific instrument can be found on this page: audition requirements


Request an Audition Time

All students will need to fill-out both the on-line form to request an audition time, and the permission slip that needs to be signed by a parent/guardian and your music teacher. The deadline for submitting your on-line request is by the end of school, Friday, February 3. Links for both forms are below:
