SIERRA VISTA CODE OF CONDUCT

Each student has the right to an atmosphere in which learning can take place. The Sierra Vista staff, students, and parents support an environment where all members will treat others will respect and courtesy.

THE DUTY OF A STUDENT

As a student in the State of California, it is my duty to comply with school regulations, pursue the required course of study, and submit to teacher authority. (Education Code, Section 48921). Along with this go the duties of punctual and regular attendance, obeying direction of teachers and administrators, kindness and courteousness to school mates, and refraining from profanity and vulgarity. (California Administrative Code, Title V., Section 200). Students are expected to treat others with respect, arrive on time, bring the necessary materials, and stay on task.

OTHER BEHAVIORS & CONSEQUENCES

1. BEHAVIOR: Students will dress in accordance with the school dress code. (Board Policy)

CONSEQUENCE: Student required to change into acceptable clothing. Parent contact.

2. BEHAVIOR: Students will not cause, attempt to cause, or threaten to cause physical injury to another person. (EC 48900, A)

CONSEQUENCE: One to five days of suspension. Parent conference. Possible police intervention.

3. BEHAVIOR: Racial, verbal or sexual harassment is not permitted. (EC 48900.2, & 3)

CONSEQUENCE:After school detention. Parent contact. Counseling referral. Possible suspension.

4. BEHAVIOR: Weapons or facsimile weapons (such as look alike knives and guns) are not allowed at school. (EC 48330, 48900, B & Penal Code 1201, I)

CONSEQUENCE: Five days of suspension. Police intervention. Recommendation for expulsion.

5. BEHAVIOR: Students will not use, be under the influence of, possess or sell drugs at school, or at school events, or while traveling to or from school. (EC 48900, C)

CONSEQUENCE: Five days of suspension. Recommendation for expulsion. Possible police intervention.

6. BEHAVIOR: Students will not consume, possess or be under the influence of alcohol at school or school sponsored events, or while traveling to or from school. (EC 48900, C)

CONSEQUENCE: Five days of suspension. Counseling referral. Police Intervention.

7. BEHAVIOR: Students will not consume or possess tobacco (including cigarettes and chewing tobacco) at school or at school sponsored events, or while traveling to or from school. (EC 48900, H & Board Policy 5136.6)

CONSEQUENCE: Three days of suspension. Counseling referral.

8. BEHAVIOR: Theft or extortion is not permitted. (EC 48900, E)

CONSEQUENCE: One to three days of suspension. Replacement of item(s). Possible police intervention.

9. BEHAVIOR: Students will respect school property and private property. (EC 48900, F & Penal Code 594)

CONSEQUENCE: Pay cost to repair damage. Work to repair damage. Community Service. Possible suspension. Possible police intervention.

10. BEHAVIOR: Committing an obscene act, or engaging in habitual profanity or vulgarity is not permitted. (EC 48900, I)

CONSEQUENCE: After school detention. Possible one to three days of suspension.

11. BEHAVIOR: Students will not bring communication beepers or phones to school. (EC 48901.5)

CONSEQUENCE: Confiscation. Parent contact. Possible one to three days of suspension.

12. BEHAVIOR: Walkmans may not be brought to school. Sound systems are not permitted on campus unless part of an academic or ASB approved activity. (EC 48900, K)

CONSEQUENCE: First offense - confiscation. Parent contact. Second offense will be treated as defiance of authority; detention/in-house suspension. Third offense - One day of home suspension.

13. BEHAVIOR: No skateboard or rollerblades are allowed at school. No bicycle riding on campus. Bicycles must be parked in designated areas. (EC 48900, K)

CONSEQUENCE: First offense - confiscation. Parent contact. Second offense will be treated as defiance of authority: detention/in-house suspension. Third offense - One day of home suspension.

14. BEHAVIOR: Gambling is not permitted. Non academic card playing or dice is not permitted.

CONSEQUENCE: After school detention. Parent contact. Possible one to three days of suspension.

15. BEHAVIOR: Students will be treat staff with respect and follow directions, including redirection of student behavior(EC 48921, & 48900, K)

CONSEQUENCE: After school detention. Possible suspension.

16. BEHAVIOR: Willful defiance of authority or disruption of academic, athletic, or activity programs is not appropriate. (EC 48900, K)

CONSEQUENCE: After school detention. Possible suspension.

17. BEHAVIOR: Gum is not permitted. (EC 48900, K)

CONSEQUENCE: Classroom and/or after school detention. Community service.

18. BEHAVIOR: Students will arrive at school on time. (EC 48260.5)

CONSEQUENCE: Seven or more tardies will result in loss of extracurricular activities.

19. BEHAVIOR: Students will attend all of their classes and have a valid pass when out of class. (EC 48260.5)

CONSEQUENCE: Class/teacher detention. After school detention or community service. Parents contacted for repeated offenses. (1 hour of truancy will result in 2 hours of consequences.) Possible SARB referral.

20. BEHAVIOR: Students will attend assigned detentions. (EC 48900, K)

CONSEQUENCE: Missed detentions are doubled with 1 week to serve the missed detention. Parent contact. No make up will result in one day suspension or community service.

21. BEHAVIOR: Students will not make terroristic threats against school officials or school property or both

CONSEQUENCE: One to five days of suspension. Possible expulsion. Possible police intervention. (EC 48900.7)

Please note: Students may also be suspended from school for any other violations of Education Code (EC) Section 48900 or 48915 not specifically listed above.

Special Education Students: Student management/disciplinary plans may be different and if so, the plans will be reflected in the individual student’s Individualized Education Plan.
