2009-2010
Each week Sierra Vista students will be introduced to a "new word" from the world of Health and Nutrition. There is so much mis-information out there that it's time to educate your sons'/daughters on how to Eat, Move, and be Healthy. Each new word will be covered during the first 2-3 minutes of class for one week. Every Monday brings a new word. The goal of the "Word Of The Week" is to help my students start to make small changes, gradually to how they eat and what the benefits of eating and moving correctly will do for their body.
Word of the week is done for the year. Scroll down to see what you missed.

(1/4-1/31)No Word Of The Week" Due to the loudness of the construction going on at school and it's an elective month we will have no word of the week until things calm down. But as a reminder drink half your body weight in ounces of water daily, sleep 9-10 hours each night making sure you are sleeping between the hours of 10pm to 2am, eat organic foods as much as possible and see if you feel better eating more protein/fats compared to carbohydrates or if you feel good eating more carbohydrates to fat/protein. Your body will tell you what it needs. Put down the sugar people. (11/30-12/11)"Review Time" We are going to review all the words of the week we have covered the first 12 weeks of school. To review ahead of time click on the Word Of The Week button and study up!
(11/16-11/25)"Sleep Cycles-Circadian Rhythm" It's time to learn about the importance of sleep. Getting to bed early could change your health and your life in powerful ways. Read below to learn more.
Circadian Cycle-a natural physiological cycle of about 24 hours that persists even in the absence of external cues.
*Spend 1/3 of our lives asleep
*Children need about 12 hours of sleep a night, Teenagers require much more sleep than adults about 9.5+ hours a night because of tremendous changes occurring in their bodies
*teenagers tend to feel more alert at night and unable to function well early in the morning. With early school start times this can lead to an accumulated sleep debt of around 3 hours per night
*when the sun rises, cortisol levels peak then taper off as the sun sets, reaching their lowest level after dark. This daily fluctuation is intended to help our bodies know when to be active and when to rest. Cortisol helps regulate mood and energy, inflammation, and metabolism
*ideal rest occurs between 10pm and 6am.
*sleep during the hours of 10pm-2am repairs our bodies. Immune cells are released to seek out and destroy cancer cells, bacteria, viruses, and other harmful agents.
*between 2am-6am, sleep lets our bodies enter a stage of psychic regeneration, and the immune system is supported by chemicals released by the brain.
(10/12-11/13)"Genetically engineered/modified foods and Whole Foods, Refined Foods, Processed Foods" Now that you have learned about Metabolic Typing it's time to learn about the quality of the food you are eating. We need to be educated. You only get one body. Let's fuel it with clean ,organic foods. Call or email me if you have any questions.

If you would like to take the Metabolic Typing Test just shoot me an email and I will send you the questionaire. Once you know what type you are I will email you your food plan to follow.
Primal Pattern Movements
Primal Pattern Movements are used in our everyday lives, at work, and in all the sports we play. They are the base for most movements we perform. These 7 Primal Pattern Movements were necessary for our ancestors to survive. All students need to memorize these movements as we will be doing them in class on a weekly basis.

If you said “yes” to any of the above then Metabolic Typing is for you. MT is a systematic, testable, repeatable, verifiable methodology for identifying genetically based individual requirements for diet and nutrition.
Metabolic Typing is a customized nutrition program based on your unique hereditary needs. The Metabolic Typing Test covers 3 areas. 1-Physical Traits 2-Diet Related Traits 3-Psychological Traits. For your body to function at its best, it needs the right combination of fat, protein and carbohydrates. The further you deviate from this unique and personal combination of nutrients, the more health, weight and physical problems you are likely to have. The MT test will tell you what foods and nutrients are optimal for your unique body type.
Once we identify which foods your body naturally requires, I will develop a customized food plan for you to follow to reach your goals and get back to optimal health full of energy and vitality.
Here are some other short term and long term benefits of eating for your Metabolic Type:
